Thomas Ray Butler Scholarship
Thomas Ray Butler, of Bolivar, Tennessee, was a remarkable man whose journey took him from the cotton fields of Tennessee to the boardrooms of the automotive industry in Detroit, Michigan. Throughout his life, Thomas was known not only for his professional achievements but also for his deep commitment to his community and the countless students and young professionals he mentored along the way.
An engineer, U.S. Air Force veteran, and proud alumnus of Tennessee State University (Class of 1969), Thomas was a man of great purpose and character. During his time at TSU, he became deeply involved in the Civil Rights Movement, and he often shared with his children and grandsons the powerful stories of his direct participation in the important work alongside John Lewis in Nashville. His legacy is one of courage, conviction, and an unwavering belief in the power of education and progress.
The Thomas Ray Butler Scholarship honors his forward thinking and benevolent spirit. Established by his Loving wife of 54 years, Jean Butler, and his daughters Yolanda Stephens and Chante Butler, this scholarship is designed to provide critical financial assistance to junior and senior students majoring in chemistry. It aims to ease the burden of hardship and ensure that deserving students can continue their studies and ultimately achieve their dreams of graduation, just as Thomas believed in the transformative power of education.
May this scholarship be a lasting reflection of Thomas's legacy -- a legacy built on love, service, and a profound dedication to lifting others as he rose.
